Frequently Asked Questions

Why Carisa Design Radiators?
Please refer to page “Why CARISA ?” located here.

What is the warranty period of Carisa Design Radiators Radiators?
Carisa Design Radiators do have different warranty periods related with the materials of the radiators. Steel and aluminium radiators have 5 years and Stainless steel radiators have 10 years of warranty period.

How much heat will I need ?
All rooms are individual and therefore the heat output required from your selected radiator will vary. It is important you choose the correct radiator to ensure enough heat is generated to keep you comfortable. A sensible tip is to always choose a model with a higher heat output than you require, as this can always be controlled by turning them down. Also you can use Carisa Heat Loss Calculator to calculate the heat output your room requires. Download link.
It is highly recommended that your installer calculates the requirement for each applicable room, so you can get the maximum heat benefit from your chosen radiator. We strongly suggest this is done before purchasing your radiator.

What radiator designs offer the best heat output?
Normally, the bigger surface area that a radiator has the more heat output will be generated. The heat output of products painted white are reduced by some 30% if the same product has a chromium plated or stainless steel finish. This is due to the surface treatment, which means less heat is transferred outwards.

What is the measurement for heat output on radiators?
All our radiators carry the heat output measured in either: BTU’s (British Thermal Unit),Watts or K/Cal.

What are the Correction Factors in the radiator data chart?
We display radiator outputs in accordance with European Standards, at a radiator to air temperature differential of 55°C.  However the hotter the radiator is above the room’s air temperature, the more heat it will emit.  A typical European heating system has an average radiator temperature of around 75°C and, if a room temperature of 20°C is required, there is a temperature difference between the radiator and the air of 55°C.  If your radiator temperature is different, simply look at the technical data of the required radiator and apply the correction factor for your calculated difference to the heat output shown to ascertain the correct heat output of the radiator.  The data chart shows correction factors for a wide range of radiator to air temperature differentials.

Where to locate my Radiator in the room ?
Radiators should be generally placed in the coldest part of the rooms. If you place it under the window, you may prevent the cold air flowing down the window . Regarding radiators used for towel warming purposes, we suggest to install your towel warmer beside the washbasin or the bath tub. The recommended height  is 15 or 20 cm from the floor level.

Why are my radiators hot at  the top and cold at bottom ?
This indicates that the radiator may have an insufficient flow of water to heat it effectively.  Large radiators need a higher water flow than small radiators.  There may be several reasons for this such as incorrect balancing, incorrect pipe sizes or an under-performing or under-sized pump.  A heating engineer should be called to carry out further investigations.

Do my radiators need venting ?
If your radiators are cold at the top and hot at the bottom, the radiator needs venting.  Simply turn off the heating system and slightly open the air vent (some radiators will require a radiator vent key, others may need a small screwdriver) until water is noted at the air vent.  Take care to protect decorated surfaces with a cloth prior to opening the air vent. Gently close the vent and switch the system back on.  If the radiators need venting frequently, there may be a fault with the system and a heating engineer should be called.

My radiator is making knocking sounds. What does that mean?
One frequent cause of 'knocking sounds' at the thermostat valve is interchanging of the flow and return. As a result, the flow in the valve is in the wrong direction. Please contact your technical specialist. If you encounter knocking sounds in aluminium radiators, the chances are the problem might be the radiator is the first radiator on the Heating system or the expansion of the aluminium material. So, you need to turn down the valve slowly level by level until the pressure minimizes and knocking sound disappears.

My radiator makes flowing sounds. Why ?
There are sounds that could be heard as rushing sounds constantly over an extended period of time. These are generally flowing noises. Normally, these are due to excessively high flow rates (because of excessively high differential pressures) in certain sections of the heat distribution, for example in valves. Flow balancing by a specialist can help.

What are my Radiator valve options ?
Depending on your choice of radiator, we have several styles to choose from, details of which can be found in our brochures and website products/accessories section.

What is the difference between a direct and an indirect system ?
A direct system is one where the tap water actually mixes with the water in the radiators.  An indirect system separates the tap water from the radiator water.  CARISA radiators must only be fitted to an indirect system.

Are CARISA products suitable for one-pipe systems ?
CARISA radiators are only suitable for two-pipe systems.  The circulation of heat from the one pipe loop to the radiator is promoted by gravity circulation.  Modern radiators generally have high hydraulic resistance pipe connections, which would prevent effective water circulation between the pipe and the Radiator.

Pipe centres
All our dimensional details are published in our current brochures. However, due to manufacturing tolerances, we strongly suggest that your final pipework position is not completed until you actually receive delivery of your radiator.
What are Dual Fuel radiators?
Some of our radiators can also work as dual fuel applications, which means when your main heating system might be turned off in the summer months, you can still operate your radiators electrically if required. Please see our current brochures for suitable models.

Can I install an Electric-only radiator ?
Where your installation location does not have immediate access to an existing water supply, we can offer purpose made electric-only products for a quick and easy solution to your heating needs. These electric only products are supplied pre filled with an electrical inhibitor solution, and fitted with a compatible heating element.

Can I fit my own radiator ?
Qualified persons should make all electrical and plumbing connections. When fitting radiators with heating elements, the radiator must always be mounted with the element at the bottom with the radiator in the upright position. Failure to do so may result in a fire hazard.

Why my electrified radiator turn off so frequently ?
With all probabilities you choose a room termostat that if istalled in a bathroom with underfloor systems, don’t work properly. Room thermostats don’t have high performance with underfloor heated bathrooms

Can I remove and refit my radiators for decoration purpose ?
We strongly suggest a specialist should be consulted.

What should I use to secure the radiator to the wall ?
Radiators are heavy items and should be securely fastened to the wall.  Specific care should be taken to identify the construction of the wall and use the appropriate fasteners to secure the radiator bracket.  Each radiator bracket has several positions for screws.

How should I clean and use my Radiator ?
You may clean your Radiator with the help of a damp piece of cloth. No harmful chemicals such as bleaches or detergents should be used. In case your Radiator is a stainless steel one, when you see some scretches on the surface and you want to clean them out, you can repair them by yourself, using the green scotch that you have found inside the box of our Radiator. Please don’t forget to polish in the direction of the original lines. Superficial scretches can be easly removed.
In case your Radiator is a chrome plated one, we recommend gentle cleaning of the high-quality chromium surface with a soft, fiber-free cloth. You can use agents specially suitable for chromium, according to the manufacturer's data of the supplier.
